We’re Phill, Marlene and Oscar the dog.
We’re a semi-retired couple living on Westray, one of Orkney’s Northern isles. Oscar is a humongous cross German Shepherd/Alaskan Malamute.
We’re members of both the Camping and Caravan Club and the Caravan and Motorhome Club and do use their campsites but tend to prefer wild camping for the out of the way seclusion that it offers. Also, since Oscars bad experience at Dingwall it is better to try and stay right away from noisy areas.
Regarding Oscar it is strange, some noises don’t seem to bother him loud ships horn in the harbour, rattling chains on the ferry as the crew fasten down the lorries, and he doesn’t bat an eyelid. Sound of a van or motorbike going past or a train in the distance and he is in a mad panic, ears down and towing me, and boy can he tow, back to the van. Sometimes we don’t even hear the noise but he has obviously heard something as his posture changes and his glancing side to side in panic. It seems so odd in such a big dog but I suppose size has nothing to do with it.
It is this behaviour in Oscar more than anything that keeps us away from all but the smallest campsites.
